The winner of the 2012 GeekFest competition was called Q Time. The application was meant to act as a portal to open up access to emergency room “wait time” data. By providing an interface for patients to see real-time wait data (website, mobile website, etc) for the various locations, patients can make a decision on when and where to go.

Running on a treadmill is tedious. No matter how far you run, you never seem to make any progress. But imagine if you could transform your treadmill into a machine that could take you running anywhere in the World….. You could run the Boston Marathon; Or along the beautiful Cabot Trail; Or perhaps you would like to go further……Europe, Australia, Asia? “Run the World” marries the power of Google Streetview to your Treadmill using your smartphone or tablet computer. Select from pre-set routes, or plan your own route – anywhere that Google Streetview has been is a place you can run! Start running and your chosen route will be displayed, with the images of the route flowing in time with your running pace. As your route takes you through the hills and valleys, so your treadmill reacts, giving that true to life experience. No more will you dread training on a treadmill!

Stores have become gigantic.  So big, in fact, that it’s impossible for any one person to know where to find every item.  Add to this the collective quest of retailers to deliver the lowest possible prices and you end up with a super-sized challenge in finding someone to help you locate your item.  The Bloodhound system lets customers use their mobile devices to find what they’re after using indoor positioning technology, existing digital product location data and wireless technology.  Go in. Get your item. Go home. Woof.

BumperCards & TCG The Trading Card Game (TM): Get Bumped!

BumperCards & TCG The Trading Card Game (TM): Get Bumped!

Finalist 2012

Jonathan Mercer, Kathryn Duffy, Andrew Whitlock, Zach Taylor, Patrick Drane, and Mike Lowe

The trading/collectable card game (TCG) is a multi-billion dollar industry. While traditionally TCGs relied upon printed material and game play took place face-to-face, a rapidly emerging trend is online TCGs, either as a direct translation of an offline TCG, or as just an online TCG. However, most online ventures have had limited success. BumperCards brings TCGs to the digital era by storing card decks on players’ mobile devices. Game play involves two or more face-to-face players, each with a mobile phone and a single tablet as the game play table. What sets BumperCards even further apart, is that it will allow users to create their own customizable card game, based upon their lives, their events, their work places, and social circles. They can share their decks with coworkers, family, friends, and other basement dwellers without requiring a separate purchase or printing a separate deck.

Its reception at the 2nd Big Brain throwdown may have been lukewarm, but I’m not ready to give up on it yet! The idea is for a smartphone application allowing multiple vehicles to share a common GPS route, enriched with messaging support through voice and text as well as possible extensions in order to facilitate group road trips. Any vehicle in the trip could propose route changes and updates, and if accepted by the other participants, everyone’s GPS route would be updated. Possible extensions could include games to play as a group on the road, or commercial support for larger fleets of vehicles so that the application could serve as a low-cost alternative to expensive commercial GPS trackers for small delivery or taxi-type businesses.
